No two people are the same, so there are many different ways to learn and to play music. This should be taken into consideration when choosing a teacher. I've pinpointed three distinctly different learning styles below.
The sight reader uses sheet music like a book. They are able to relate what they see to what they play. This can be difficult and frustrating to many but with practice and determination this opens up a door of possibilities to the type of music they would like to play.
The ear player relies on what they hear to what is being played. Sheet music is glanced over and given a thought but the player relies more on what they hear and relates to the feel of the tune more than reading music. This works well with band/group type players.
The one timer has that one song that they've always wanted to play. They might have even picked out the melody but would like to learn the whole song. Memorization and practice can allow this player to be taught. It will take some determination and time.
The line of "theory" connects all of these different styles. Depending on the age and level of training will determine exactly what method will be taught - but I guarantee your overall training will allow you to be accomplished in any of these categories.
